Vacation time

We're taking a much-needed vacation this week.  Wayne stayed home to look after the hardware store and the goat, and my sister Elaine is coming by the house to check on the garden.  We'll be at the cabin up at Jumping Branch Lake doing some fishing and enjoying the scenery for the last time this summer.  See you next week! :)

Why do they call it "canning" when we use jars?

The canning tomatoes are coming ripe in everyone gardens.  Floyd ordered an extra supply of mason jars in anticipation of a busy weekend at the store.
This year's foreign students at the Plantsburg Agriculture and Vocational College and moving in this weekend.  They are expecting students from faraway places including England, Japan, Brazil and Idaho.
The Special Events Committee is getting ready for the big bicentennial celebration this fall.  Granny Crowder said it is a waste of time because nothing has happened around here in the last two hundred years worth celebrating.

New menu items at the Cafe

The Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street has some new items on its menu.  Wayne ordered the sushi for lunch but sent it back.  He said he knows bait when he sees it.
Darlene and I tried going to the movie again last night but not enough other people showed up so it was cancelled.
The Hoake's Mill Ladies Club bake-off is scheduled for next week.  Gayle Mosely already is busy in the kitchen fine-tuning her recipes.  She's considered a sure winner in the apple pie category since both Chief Wilkins and Fire Chief Pace managed to get themselves on the judging panel.

Political shocker

The town was stunned this morning with the surprise resignation of Cleve Hunnicutt from the Town Council.  He has to be out of town on a bull buying trip next month and would miss the annual town meeting.
The Plantsburg Business Development Committee is holding a business festival at the motel on the edge of town.  It's goal is to expose Plantsburg businessmen to our community.  Leyland Wilson said that the last time a Plantsburg businessman was exposed at that motel it didn't end well.
There will be a cooking demonstration at the library on Wednesday at noon featuring local author and culinary expert Vicky Crowder (Billy Ray's wife.)  She'll be preparing her famous venison hot dogs with parsnip relish and fluffermutter cookies.  The police and fire departments are expected to be well represented.

Date night in Hoake's Mill

Sarah Wilson called a few minutes ago to say she wouldn't be attending Monday afternoon's meeting of the Morning Club.  She has to drive Leyland to Plantsburg for his hearing aid check-up.  She told Leyland to set the day aside but she's not sure he heard her.
Floyd was quite upset last night after the town council meeting.  The state has mandated that the town get new voting machines.  Floyd said it would have been nice to know that before they wasted money on five elections' worth of new pencils.
The last community concert of the summer will be held tonight.  It's town "date night" so child care will be provided in the Buckner's barn if their mare has foaled.

Fund-raiser planned

The Hoake's Mill Ladies' Club will be holding a pancake breakfast to raise funds for the volunteer fire department.  We're hoping to raise enough to buy a siren for the second truck so that Daryl won't have to stick his head out the window and yell for people to get out of the way.
L.C. Finney is a little worried about his brother's upcoming visit.  L.C.'s sister-in-law is a foreign lady and he doesn't speak Canadian.
Our son Buddy came by for lunch.  He had an elderly gentleman come into his office this morning wanting to have a new will drawn up.  Buddy said it was the usual until the fellow said that he wanted to leave half of his estate to his second wife and the other half to his favorite cow.

Bulletin in possible legal trouble

Our son Wayne helped with closing up the Boy Scout camp at Jumping Branch Lake this weekend.  They thought they had lost three canoes, but they found them at the Girl Scout camp across the lake.  That might explain why several boys went AWOL the last week of camp.
E.J. Greenwood has big trouble at The Bulletin.  He ran a nice story about Granny Crowder's birthday celebration last week and mentioned her age.  She's threatening to sue.
Floyd's brother Boyce sang the solo during the church service Sunday.  Pastor Bramlett thinks that Cleve shows real promise to win the hog calling contest this year.

Quilting Bee this weekend

Darlene and I were going to go to the movies last night while her husband Jack was at the hospital board meeting, but they needed the projector for a film on a new defibrilator so the theater was closed.
The annual marathon Quilting Bee will be held this weekend.  All the ladies, and a few men, have stacks and stacks of squares ready to go.  Most of the local businesses are anticipating a long sick list on Monday.
Daryl Hucks has decided that he wants to get in on the food truck phenomenon that is sweeping the nation.  He'll be out for his first time tonight, parked at the gas station on Poplar Street.  Look for the blue pick-up truck with the cooler on the tailgate.

Bad weather

The big storm we had flattened one of Bill Mudder's chicken coops.  He's selling the birds that succumbed as assorted chicken parts.  He just isn't sure which parts are which.
My sister Elaine's youngest son Danny has been working at Cleve Hunnicutt's feed and garden store this summer.  It's worked out fine since Cleve put him in the feed part of the store after Danny tossed out dozens of pots of ornamental grasses because he thought they were weeds.
The Hoake's Mill Town Players are in rehearsal for their summer production of "Sweeney Todd."  Floyd's brother Harper is playing the male lead.  His wife, Janice, will be glad when it's over because he's been addressing the customers at the drug store in character.

Art exhibit opens

The Hoake's Mill Film Festival this weekend was a huge success.  E.J. Greenwood's Power Point presentation on the history of the printing press drew a nice audience.  The video of Daryl Hucks' whitewater rafting trip won the award for best comedy.  Jimmy Wilson took home the big prize, the Golden Meadow Muffin, for his film "A Year in the Life of Corn."  It was a race against time but they got the green carpet returned to the funeral home in time for George Atchinson's funeral.
The family gathered at Granny Crowders' Sunday for her birthday celebration.  Much attention was paid to my sister Elaine's little granddaughter.  She chose to take her first steps and headed straight out Granny's front door.  Her father said that he has had that urge himself on more than one occasion.
There's a new art exhibit at the library featuring oil paintings by the Hunnicutt sisters.  Ethel might need new glasses because a few of her paintings looked like she got the colors for some of the numbers mixed up.

Leyland Wilson honored

They had their big annual dinner at the Agriculture and Vocational College last night.  Leyland Wilson was honored with the poultry science achievement of the year award for developing a new breed of rooster, much to the delight of many hens in the area.  Sarah thought it was bad form to serve chicken.
Floyd got home early from his Homeland Security Committee meeting.  They were supposed to review their Ready Alert program, but they had to postpone it until someone can find the key to the supply closet.
I got a letter from Aunt Lucy today.  My grandson Ryan brought the mail when he came to visit, but he got distracted and ripped the envelope on the barbed wire fence.  We lost the third page, so I'm not sure why Uncle Jake is in jail.

Film festival opens

There was a nice ceremony at the ballfield last night to dedicate the new outhouse.  The evening ended on a down note, though as the Mudder Cluckers dropped another game, along with most of the pop flies.
The Hoake's Mill Film Festival opens tonight.  It will feature a new film by Daryl Hucks' son Jimmy "The Fish of Jumping Branch Lake" and videos of Darlene and Jack Rodgers' trip to the Grand Canyon.
Our youngest son Wayne is back on the dating market.  Jamie, the new second shift waitress at the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street, must be interested because she brought him extra napkins with his lunch today.

Meeting postponed

My friend Darlene hosted a surprise stork shower last night for her daughter Dinah.  The most surprised person was Dinah's husband.  She's been so busy getting her students ready for their dance recital that she hadn't gotten around to telling him she was expecting again.
The art museum at the library will be closed this week.  The children's librarian got married over the weekend and left for his honeymoon, but he forgot to leave the key to the closet where they keep the good pictures.
The Once-A-Week Club had to postpone its monthly meeting.  My sister Elaine was to host, but her cucumber crop came in and she'll be pickling that day.

Heat wave

Like much of the country, it's been a bit warm here the past few days.  It caused some difficulty at the Morning Club's meeting yesterday afternoon.  The guest speaker was an ice sculptor.  The a/c in the meeting room wasn't working too well, so his planned sculpture of an bald eagle looked more like a sparrow.
Everyone's looking forward to the big grand opening of Charlotte Hunnicutt's new antique shop on Poplar Street this weekend.  The high school band is going to take advantage of the expected large turnout by selling doughnuts to raise money for the tuba fund.
The Convention and Tourism Bureau is hosting a fancy dinner at the high school on Saturday.  The home economics students from Plantsburg Agriculture and Vocational College are preparing the meal.  We understand they have made wonderful progress since the Jaycees dinner, so they should be able to get through the evening without bothering the fire department.

New feature at the funeral home

Floyd said that Leyland Wilson came into the hardware store today to buy a new smoke alarm for his house.  Sarah said it was a waste of money because if it went off during the night she would never be able to hear it over Leyland's snoring.
Our daughter Alice saw an old movie on TV last week and in one scene the female star was wearing a beautiful long, flowing diaphanous negligee.  Alice decided to get one for some fun on her and Peter's anniversary.  It was going well until she tripped on the hem and landed in the potted fern.
E.J. Greenwood had a nice article in this week's newspaper about the new digital visitors' book at the funeral home.  Floyd's brother Harper thinks it is a terrible idea.  He said that pretty soon folks will just tweet their condolences.
And that's what's happening in Hoake's Mill.

Class reunion

We had our annual class reunion party at the high school Saturday night.  There was some excitement when Jess Smith wandered into the ladies' powder room by mistake.  Darlene Rodgers wasn't sure it really was a mistake since he did the same thing at the graduation dance 43 years ago.
Cleve and Charlotte Hunnicutt attended their niece's wedding this past weekend.  The reception was catered by the coffee shop at the motel on the edge of town. Charlotte was a bit taken aback when people started doing something called the chicken dance.  She said that her parents raised chickens for 50 years and she knows those people were doing it wrong.
My sister-in-law Vicky just called with big news.  She's been having to go to the laundromat since her washer flooded her laundry room.  Today she found out that they've put in a TV so now she won't miss Divorce Court while she's folding the clothes.

Scandal at the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street

Gayle Mosely has put a lot of effort into her rose garden this year and we all thought she would win the Hi Hoe Garden Club's Garden of the Year award.  Tragically, the day the judges came she had overlooked a spent bloom on her stunning "Mister Lincoln."  Gayle is maintaining a low profile for a few days.
Big news from Mavis down to the beauty shop.  One of the girls who waitresses at the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street just had her husband run off with his lover, Harold.  The poor girl was so upset that she had to take a few days off work, and went camping with her boyfriend.
Cleve Hunnicutt and my brother Billy Ray played golf today up at Jumping Branch Lake.  Billy Ray reported that Cleve spent most of the time in the woods looking for his golf ball.  Cleve claimed it was simply cooler in the shade.

Play ball!

The community talent show was a huge success.  So many talented people.  The winner was Dr. Bruckner's niece, who performed a stunning rendition of Patsy Cline's "Crazy" on the bass drum.  She's a lovely girl.
My niece Sandy (Boyce and Barbara's oldest) was over this morning with her daughter to pick some flowers.  Hers aren't doing too well.  Barbara claims she must have overwatered them because her other children's flowers look fine, but when both of your parents are teachers your entire life is graded on a curve.
My brother-in-law Harper's grandson started playing Little League this summer and we went to his game yesterday afternoon.  Bill Mudder generously agreed to sponsor the team to promote his chicken farm, so they're proudly wearing Mudder Cluckers uniforms.  They lost 8-2.

Snake!

There was some excitement over to the Wilsons' house today.  Sarah found a snake in her garden watering bucket.  Leyland flailed away with his cane until he killed it.  You can barely notice the lump he left on Sarah's head.
Last night the town council appropriated money to put a second bathroom in the jail.  It will save a lot of time for Chief Wilkins who several times has had to send a deputy to re-get somebody who wandered off while going over to the gas station to use the facilities.
The annual Hoake's Mill Talent Show will be held tomorrow night in the high school auditorium.  I hear they have quite a line-up of performers.  I'm afraid we won't be able to attend, but E.J. Greenwood has promised that it will be covered live by the newspaper.

Post office re-opened

Our dear friend Darlene Rodgers won the peach pie baking competition sponsored by the Hoake's Mill Ladies Club yesterday.  Gayle Mosely was a bit miffed that she was disqualified after Chief Wilkins helped himself to an extra big slice and didn't leave enough for the rest of the judges to taste.
My sister-in-law Barbara's niece and her new husband just returned from their honeymoon trip to Mexico.  She said they saw lots of goats just like they raise at home but couldn't understand them because they bleated in Spanish.
The repairs at the post office are finished.  We all appreciated Cleve Hunnicutt giving up space at his store for mail distribution during the construction.  My sister Elaine thought it worked fairly well, except that she got some unusual stares walking out of the feed and garden store with her packages from Victoria's Secret.
And that's what's happening in Hoake's Mill.

What a weekend

We had 78 people here Sunday for the Crowder family reunion.  When I cleaned up I discovered several platters and casserole dishes that people left behind, two jackets, a pair of pants and one child.  He looks like a Crowder.  I'm sure someone will be over to claim him in a few days.  I am a bit curious about who left without their pants.
There was a big turnout for the annual 4th of July fishing tournament and fish fry up to Jumping Branch Lake.  It was a lovely event although the meal was delayed while they made an emergency run to the grocery store for some hot dogs and hamburgers after Daryl Hucks accidentally overturned the boat carrying the morning's catch.
Everyone gathered Monday night for the Independence Day concert and fireworks at the fairgrounds.  The community orchestra played selections by Irving Berlin, John Phillip Sousa and Conway Twitty.  The budget for fireworks was cut back severely this year, but mot people brought their own sparklers so it looked really pretty.

Happy 4th of July!

I don't have much time today because we're all so busy preparing for the big Independence Day weekend events.  The new junior high school band has been practicing for the 4th of July parade tomorrow.  It will be their first public performance and their parents are so pleased.  They should really be something when they all get instruments.
I talked to my sister Elaine today.  She said that general sessions court was cancelled so Judge could get ready for the Jumping Branch Lake fishing tournament this weekend.  He is determined not to be outfished this year by anyone he sent to prison before.
I must cut this short and go check to see what Bryan and Ryan are blowing up in the backyard.  I hope it isn't another chicken.
And that's what's happening in Hoake's Mill.  Have a safe and happy holiday.

Beauty pageant results

There's exciting news today.  The Miss Hoake's Mill beauty pageant was held last night over to the high school and my brother-in-law Harper's oldest granddaughter won the crown.  She's going to use her scholarship money to attend the Plantsburg Agricultural and Vocational College half-day waitress training program.  We're so pleased that she is going to continue her education.
Daryl Hucks came into the hardware store today with his latest idea to make his fortune.  He going to start selling maple syrup starter kits:  a maple sapling, a tap and a pail.  Daryl is such an entrepreneur.
The church choir will practice tonight with the new hymnals.  The songs are the same but Pastor Bramlett says we haven't been doing overly well on those as of late.

Shooting accident!

The archery range up to the Jumping Branch Lake Sportsmen's Club opened for the season Saturday.  Everything went well until a bee stung Police Chief Wilkins just as he was releasing his arrow.  He claims it was a complete accident that the errant arrow found Fire Chief Pace's backside.
My grandsons Brian and Ryan's new little country rock band was booked to play as the weekly live entertainment at the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street Friday night.  It was meat loaf night so there was a good turnout, but there seemed to be an unusual number of people getting their dinners to go.
I got a lovely letter today from my cousin Emily.  She recently moved to Atlanta and is busy getting settled and meeting new people.  She said she hasn't met any single men who seem promising.  Her new insurance agent is too old, her new dentist is too young, and her new hairdresser asked a lot of questions about her brother.

Movie night!

I received a nice e-mail this morning from our daughter Alice in Baltimore.  She said that her neighbor plans to spend the summer building a new deck off the back of his house.  His wife thought it would be a lot of work, but she hasn't noticed any so far.
Police Chief Wilkins came into the hardware store yesterday afternoon.  He said he has decided he needs to downsize his kennel of hunting dogs, especially the females.  He has so many new litters right now that he's threatening to start handing out puppies instead of traffic tickets.
Saturday will be busy at the fairgrounds.  There's a sheep sale and shearing contest in the morning.  Then they have to get things cleaned up for the summer events committee's outdoor movie night.  I'm told they successfully patched the leak in the inflatable screen.  On the last movie night, the screen started sinking before the Titanic did.

Sorry I missed your call

Our phone service was interrupted for several hours today when a road crew accidentally cut a line.  Leyland Wilson said he was unaware that there was a problem and that the service didn't seem any worse than usual.
I saw Charlotte Hunnicutt at the Morning Club's meeting yesterday afternoon.  Her antiques business isn't keeping her as busy as she thought it would, so she plans to take a ceramics class at Plantsburg Agriculture and Vocational College.  Cleve says that she doesn't need a class to learn to throw a vase and he has the scars to prove it.
My sister Elaine's granddaughter has left for a week to visit her aunt and uncle in Philadelphia.  She took her pet pig with her.  It's expecting a litter any day now.  I'm sure it won't be in the way.

It was a busy weekend

A new family is moving in on the street where our son Buddy and his family live.  It was nice weather Saturday, so everyone came to watch the moving van unload.  The girls' softball team took advantage of the turnout to sell lemonade to raise money for the bat and hat fund.
There was a dedication ceremony up to Jumping Branch Lake this weekend to name the footbridge after Fire Chief Dewitt Pace.  Chief Pace said he appreciated the gesture but would have to lose about 50 lbs. to meet the maximum weight limit to use it.  Chief has been eating a lot of Gayle Mosely's pies lately.
Mavis Pinkston was beside herself with pride today.  She just learned that her niece made the Dean's List at her college last term.  She received straight A's except for a B+ in shampoo procedure.

Where eggs come from

My sister-in-law Vicky (Billy Ray's wife) was over for a visit today.  She said that her sister has gone on another diet to try to lose the weight she gained with her second son.  He's 24 now so I think that excuse has run its course, especially since he's adopted.
Our son Wayne came home from the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street with big news.  They have been working with the Greater Hoake's Mill Convention and Tourism Bureau to improve facilities for visitors to our area and today took delivery of a new six-seater table.
My granddaughter Lori has been here all week for a visit.  Alice told me not to take her to any farms this year.  Last year, Lori wouldn't drink milk for a month after learning where it came from.  It's a good thing she didn't see a chicken lay an egg.

Trouble in Paradise

Since Cleve Hunnicutt gave over space in the feed and garden store to house the post office until the repairs are done, his wife Charlotte's antique business has been squeezed into a corner.  So she is renting a store of her own on Poplar Street.  She's still deciding on a name for it.  Cleve said she should call it "Charlotte's dusty old junk."  Cleve will be staying at his brother's house for a few days.
We received a nice note yesterday afternoon from Floyd's sister Patty in Tampa.  There might be some trouble brewing in their household.  She said that her husband Deke bought a new set of golf clubs and is giving them the kind of loving attention she hasn't seen toward her in years.
Yesterday was the Once-A-Week Club's monthly meeting.  We were supposed to see a film on the power of independent women, but we couldn't find one of the husbands to set up the projector.  It was a nice afternoon though.

Graduation party cancelled

Buddy took his twins' new puppy to obedience school after it chewed up his new fishing creel.  I'm sorry to have to report that the puppy didn't do very well and is being held back, so the graduation party has been cancelled.  Come to remember, the same thing happened to Buddy.
Some volunteers repainted the jail cell at the police station this weekend.  The paint was donated by Mavis Pinkston who had some left after repainting the beauty shop.  Chief Wilkins said he appreciated the gesture but would have preferred if it wasn't lavender.
We all gathered over at the Wilsons' house on Sunday evening to celebrate Sarah's birthday.  Leyland allowed that it seemed an awful lot of fuss for a woman who hasn't admitted to having aged a year since 1978.

Outdoor concert this weekend!

It's going to take a little longer than they expected to get the repairs done at the post office.  Cleve Hunnicutt has agreed to let them use some space at the feed and garden store to distribute mail in the meantime.  We noticed that the mail we picked up today smelled faintly of fertilizer, but it included a letter from my Aunt Lucy so that could account for the odor.
Our youngest son Wayne has started dating a very nice young lady from Plantsburg.  Her daddy is a professor at the Agriculture and Vocational College where she is enrolled in the feedlot management program.  That will come in handy considering the way Wayne eats.
We're all looking forward to the community orchestra's first outdoor concert of the summer tomorrow night.  They'll be playing selections by Bach, Gershwin and Earl Scruggs.
And that's what's happening in Hoake's Mill.

Big fire in Hoake's Mill

There was a terrible fire last night at the post office.  Fire Chief Dewitt Pace and his crew did a great job and kept the damage to just the drop-off box.  Unfortunately Daryl Hucks was driving the pumper truck and got the gears mixed up.  Made quite a hole in the front wall where he backed through it.
My daughter Alice and her husband were just in New York City for a dentists' convention.  I'm surprised they didn't run into our friends the Lyles.  They were there at the same time.  From what Alice said they saw so many people that they couldn't have missed anyone.
The coffee shop at the motel on the edge of town is really making an effort to compete with the Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street.  They've just added an "al fresco" dining area with two picnic tables and an unobstructed view of the interstate highway.  It's lovely.
And that's what's happening in Hoake's Mill.

And a lovely weekend it was

Pastor Bramlett and his wife hosted their annual thank you party for the members of the choir and the Sunday School teachers after church yesterday.  Their home was beautifully decorated with balloons, ribbons and the flowers left from Earl Sanders funeral.
It's a tradition at Hoake's Mill High School to have the valedictorian from 25 years earlier give the commencement address.  We aren't sure who will be doing the honors at next week's ceremonies.  The valedictorian of 1986 suddenly left town this weekend after a discrepancy was discovered in the beer fund at the V.F.W. Club.
The Morning Club has its regular meeting this afternoon.  We decided to plan a day trip to the Plantsburg Agriculture and Vocational College's horticulture department's plant fair.  My dear friend Darlene Rodgers said she's not going.  The last time she was there she was chased by a runaway pullet from the poultry science department and still hasn't recovered from the experience.

Gossip from the beauty shop

The big story at Mavis Pinkston's beauty shop today was that Sally Miller left her husband and ran off with the dishwasher salesman from North Street Appliances.  I was completely shocked.  I had no idea that Sally had bought a new dishwasher.
The Main Street Cafe on Poplar Street was late opening this morning because they had their annual restaurant inspection.  Brenda, the first shift waitress, said that they would have been done sooner if the inspectors hadn't spent so much time inspecting the chocolate cream pies.
Our dear friend and neighbor Leyland Wilson is back at home after traveling to Plantsburg yesterday for his cataract surgery.  He says he's seeing just fine now but he's surprised how much his wife Sarah aged in two days.

The news from Hoake's Mill

Our son Buddy bought his twins a new puppy for their birthday yesterday.  We haven't seen it yet.  Buddy's wife Amanda described it as looking like a mix between a cocker spaniel and her Uncle Larry.
There was a really good turnout today for Grey Adams' funeral.  They served a nice lunch afterwards but Grey's Uncle Preston didn't join us because he forgot to wear his teeth.
Congratulations go out today to Daryl Huck's youngest boy, Billy.  He's the first young man from Hoake's Mill to complete the 10-month dairy production course at Plantsburg Agricultural and Vocational College and did it in only two years.  Daryl is so proud.
